Fatal California train accident the result of deranged man

The commuter train crash and derailment that occurred in Glendale, California early Wednesday morning killed at least ten people, fire officials said.

More than 100 people are injured, according to Glendale Police Chief Randy Adams, but because the train crash involved commuter trains, the number of passengers involved in the derailment is still not known.

There are more than 75 agencies currently involved in the rescue and recovery of the fatal train accident. One passenger identified dead is Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy James Tutino, a 23-year-veteran.

Officials said the accident was caused when a man described as deranged and suicidal parked his SUV on the tracks.

The suspect has been identified as Juan Manuel Alvarez, 26, of Compton. After Alvarez apparently changed his mind and got out of the vehicle before impact, he watched the collision. He is said to have attempted suicide before.

Alvarez was taken into custody at the scene of the train crash and will be charged with homicide.
